No. Every account includes a sandbox domain, so you can send test mail and inspect the logs before you touch DNS. We highly recommend of course adding your own domain when you are ready to move to a production version of your project.
The free plan includes up to two custom sending domains, plus the sandbox domain. Paid plans include unlimited domains.

No. The free plan does not expire, and we do not close accounts just because you have not sent for a while. Small senders stay on the same production network. Accounts that break the Acceptable Use Policy can still be suspended.
We verify accounts to protect the shared sending reputation, so legitimate mail has a better chance of reaching the inbox. During verification you tell us whether you plan to send transactional email, marketing email, or both. Marketing over SMTP has to be declared on that form. We may follow up if something is unclear. See the Acceptable Use Policy for the sending rules that sit behind that check.
