Insights from a Cultural Sector Web Designer on Maileroo's Impact

Tell us a bit about your business and what you do.

I am a web designer and developer working primarily in WordPress for the cultural sector (music and art). I develop custom websites for artists and cultural organizations as well as integrating functions like ecommerce, tailored workflows and supporting them in their promotional efforts with both web and print strategy and design. In addition, I manage several web servers for both my own and client websites.

Before using Maileroo, what challenges did you face with email delivery or marketing?

I recently moved to a server that doesn't offer email and needed to come up with a solution to handle transactional email for my WordPress-based sites. Since most of my clients are using an external email provider (such as Google Workspace), I wanted to avoid complicated API setups (i.e. Google Cloud Services). I also have clients who are moving away from increasingly expensive email marketing platforms like MailChimp.

What made you choose Maileroo over other platforms?

I tried out several transactional email services, including Postmark and Bravo and when I came across Maileroo, I created an account and did some testing there, as well. The cost, with a generous free plan, and the timely (and personal) support I received led me to sign up for a paid account to handle all my hosted client needs. I was also impressed by the well-written instructions and documentation - something that is not common these days.

How easy was it to get started, and how does Maileroo fit into your workflow today?

In part due to the excellent documentation, I found it very easy to get going with Maileroo. Since I manage all my clients' DNS, I was able to get things set up quickly. I did require some help to understand how DNS works with several instances where the client site was served by Cloudflare, but the support was fantastic and fast. I haven't had any problems at all with Maileroo since setting things up. I use the Maileroo plugin (with the API) in my sites and have had zero issues.

What improvements or results have you noticed since switching?

Everything just works and I can easily look in now and then to see what is happening.

Can you share a specific example of how Maileroo has helped your business?

When I first moved to the new server, my open-source control panel (along with many others') was hacked and in a couple of instances, the existing SMTP plugin that used Google's API was hijacked to send thousands of spam emails. Those domains ended up being blacklisted and blocked temporarily – I learned (the hard way) that Google GMail API doesn't by default have a reasonable limits set on sends). After recovering from the hack and installing a quickly-released update to the control panel, I had to find a better email solution, one I felt was more secure. That's when I searched out Maileroo. While I haven't had much experience yet with the email marketing side of things, I recently set up one of my clients to do this. We are still working on the email template and I will report back when I've had more hands-on experience with this aspect of Maileroo's services.

What's been the most surprising or unexpected benefit of using Maileroo?

The support blew me away. I feel really secure knowing that I'll get an answer, usually very quickly, to any question or concern I have. Plus, Maileroo has a really nice, well-thought-out interface which I have to admit influenced my choice (I am a designer), not to mention the very low cost for a great, easy to manage service.

Would you recommend Maileroo to others in your industry?

I would and I have! Top reasons are reliability, support and affordability.
