API Management keys allow you to interact with and manage parts of your Maileroo account programmatically through the API.
They can be used for tasks such as adding and managing domains, handling suppressions, managing account settings, and more.
Important: API Management keys are not used for sending emails. If you need to send emails through the Maileroo Email API or SMTP, use a Sending Key or an Application instead.
What are API Management keys used for?
API Management keys are particularly useful when you want to give a person, system, integration, or third party programmatic access to your Maileroo account without giving them unrestricted access to everything.
When creating an API Management key, you can select which API endpoints and features the key is allowed to access.
For example, you could create a key that can:
Manage domains
Manage suppression lists
Access specific account management endpoints
Perform other administrative API actions
This gives you greater control over what each API key can do.
How do I create an API Management key?
Log in to your Maileroo account.
In the top-right corner, click your profile.
From the dropdown menu, select API Management.
On the API Management page, create a new API key.
Give the key the appropriate permissions by selecting the endpoints or features it should have access to.
Save the key and securely store the generated API key.
Your API key can then be used with the authorised Maileroo API endpoints.
Why should I restrict API key permissions?
We recommend only giving an API key the permissions it actually needs.
For example, if you're providing a third-party developer with access to manage your suppression list, you don't necessarily need to give that key access to every available management endpoint.
Restricting the available endpoints helps provide an additional layer of security and flexibility, particularly when:
Working with external developers or agencies
Creating internal integrations
Giving different team members different levels of API access
Connecting third-party systems to Maileroo
Building automated account-management workflows
API Management keys vs Sending Keys
It's important to use the right type of key for the job:

If your goal is to send an email, use a Sending Key or Application, not an API Management key.
